Returning an item on Huurmarkt

RenterOwnerLast updated: Sep 21, 2026

In short

At return:

  • Hand the item back on time and in the same condition.
  • Take photos of the condition at return.
  • Check the item together if possible.
  • Four hours after the return moment, the owner is asked in the conversation whether everything is in order; the same choice is on the booking page.
  • If they choose All good, your deposit goes back and their payout is started. If they do nothing, that happens automatically after 72 hours.
  • Late return may incur additional fees.

When do I have to return the item?

The item must be returned:

  • On the agreed date
  • At the agreed time
  • At the agreed location

These details are visible in your bookings overview and chat.

If no time was agreed, the end of the last rental day (Dutch time) counts as the return moment. For a stay this is called checking out; the steps below are the same.

What should I check before returning?

Make sure the item is:

  • Clean (where reasonably expected)
  • Complete (all accessories present)
  • In the same condition as at pickup (apart from normal wear)
  • Safely inspectable

For vehicles, also check:

  • Fuel level
  • Mileage
  • Any warning lights

Always take photos at return

For your own protection:

  • Take clear photos at return.
  • Photograph all sides (for vehicles).
  • Capture existing and any new damage.
  • Include timestamps if possible.

This helps in case of later disputes.

How does the return work in the app and on the site?

The return runs in the conversation for your booking and on the booking page; whatever you do in one place shows up in the other right away.

  1. You bring the item back at the agreed moment. On the booking page you can record that you returned it (I have returned it). That settles nothing: it only puts a timestamp next to your photos, in case you disagree later.
  2. Four hours after the return moment, the owner is asked in the conversation whether everything is in order, with two buttons: All good and Report damage. The same choice is on their booking page, and they may make it earlier, as soon as the item is back.
  3. All good completes the booking: your deposit goes back to you, the owner's payout is started, and both of you can leave a review.
  4. Report damage opens a damage report. What happens next, and what it means for the deposit, is in Reporting damage.

If the owner does nothing, they get a reminder after a day. 72 hours after the last rental day (or after the recorded return moment, if the item came back later) the return is automatically settled as in order: your deposit goes back, the owner is paid out, and damage can no longer be reported.

When does the rental period officially end?

The rental ends when the owner has confirmed the return (All good) or when the 72-hour window has passed. From that moment the booking shows as Completed.

What if I return late?

For late returns:

  • Additional rent may be charged
  • Part of the deposit may be retained
  • A dispute may arise for serious delays

Always inform the owner as early as possible if you expect to be late.

Repeated or extreme lateness can lead to account restrictions.

What if the owner isn't there at return?

If the owner doesn't appear:

  1. Wait a reasonable period.
  2. Reach out via chat.
  3. Take clear photos of the situation.
  4. Report it via the platform if needed.

It can be treated as an owner no-show.

What if damage is found?

If the owner finds damage:

  • They choose Report damage in the conversation or on the booking page, with a description, the amount requested and photos.
  • That has to happen before they say All good and before the 72-hour window passes; after that the return is settled.
  • You see the report in the conversation and can choose I agree or I disagree.

Neither answer moves any money: Huurmarkt assesses the report and decides whether, and up to what amount, the deposit is withheld. Until that decision your deposit stays held. See Reporting damage.

Car rentals: extra notes

When returning a car:

  • Return the vehicle at the agreed fuel level.
  • Report any damage immediately.
  • Inspect the condition together if possible.
  • Traffic fines that arrive later may still be charged through.

If the vehicle is heavily soiled or damaged, additional fees may apply.

What happens after return?

After correct completion:

  • The deposit release is initiated: as soon as the owner chooses All good, and otherwise no later than 72 hours after the last rental day.
  • The owner's payout is initiated.
  • The booking shows as Completed.
  • Both parties can leave a review, from the conversation.

Releasing means the refund is initiated. From that point it takes another five to ten business days before the amount is in the renter's account.

See the deposit policy for full details.

What is not allowed?

  • Keeping the item without an extension.
  • Arranging changes outside the platform.
  • Hiding damage or failing to report it.
  • Settling the deposit outside the platform.

All communication and handling must go through Huurmarkt.

Disputes after return

If you disagree with a damage report:

  • Choose I disagree in the conversation and explain why.
  • Make sure your pickup and return photos are submitted; they are your evidence.
  • Huurmarkt assesses the report within ten business days of it being complete.

While the report is under review, the deposit stays held.

Summary

At return:

  • Return on time and in good condition.
  • Always take photos.
  • Check together if possible.
  • Late return may incur fees.
  • Four hours after the return moment the owner chooses All good or Report damage in the conversation; if they do nothing, it is settled as in order after 72 hours.
  • The deposit is released after correct completion.

A careful return prevents disputes.
