Renting saves you the purchase, but it stands or falls with the fit — so ask the owner in the chat for shoulder width, sleeve and inside-leg length, and ask whether you can try it on before you book. Rental days are calendar days including the first and the last: picking up on Friday for the gala and returning on Monday counts as four days, not one evening.

Renting a tuxedo or gala dress for a gala or wedding
If the invitation says black tie, it is a tuxedo; for anything less strict a dark suit with a tie will do. As a wedding guest, pick a colour that does not clash with the bridal party; as the groom, a wedding suit you can keep for a few days. Ask whether returning on Sunday evening works too; that saves a rental day. And decide item by item: buy the suit you wear every month, rent the tuxedo you put on one evening a year.
Renting carnival clothing and costumes
Carnival, a themed party, the Santa suit in December: costumes for adults sit under Themed, Role & Costume Wear, children's costumes under Baby, Kids & Toys. Two rules weigh more heavily here than elsewhere. You only rent out what you own — so not the dress you borrowed from a friend — and counterfeit branded items may not be rented out. Size, fit and what is included
- Size and fit: XS through XXL and Men's, Women's or Unisex are filters under Formal & Occasion Wear, Themed, Role & Costume Wear and Professional Clothing & Gear; they appear once you pick one of those subcategories. One listing can offer several sizes.
- Real measurements: a standard size says little; measure a suit you already own and give the owner the numbers in the chat.
- Included accessories: free text on the listing, not a filter — do not assume a bow tie, cufflinks, shoes or a wig are included.
- Return condition: also stated per listing and the real answer to the hygiene question, for example return clean and dry.
- Half day: only where the owner offers it, and rarely practical for an evening occasion.
Renting workwear and protective equipment
Safety shoes, a climbing harness, ear and respiratory protection and workwear sit under Professional Clothing & Gear and not with the tools — worth knowing, because protective equipment is usually not included with a machine. This is also the only subcategory with its own Safety certified filter. With a climbing harness or fall protection, ask when it was last inspected.
Frequently asked questions
What does it cost to rent a tuxedo, gala dress or costume?
The owner sets the day price, so it is shown per listing — and on Huurmarkt clothing can also be shared for free. For orientation: Dutch rental companies often ask between €60 and €95 a day for a tuxedo, with a deposit of €50 to €100, and a gala dress starts at around €25 (market figures, not Huurmarkt prices). Compare in calendar days: even if you wear the suit for one evening, the pick-up day and the return day both count, so check whether you can bring it back on Sunday rather than Monday. Can I try the suit or dress on, and what if it does not fit?
Huurmarkt has no fitting feature and no separate 'does not fit' cancellation ground, so settle it before you book. Ask the owner in the chat for shoulder width, sleeve and inside-leg length or the length of the dress, and ask whether you can come by to try it on before you confirm the booking. You can filter by Size (XS through XXL) and Fit/gender (Men's, Women's or Unisex) once you pick a subcategory; one listing can offer several sizes, so read the description to see which ones are actually on the rail. Who cleans the clothing, and how do I return it?
Huurmarkt prescribes no washing rule, but the help centre expects you to return an item clean where that is reasonably expected — with clothing that is nearly always. The owner can state a Return condition on the listing, for example clean and dry or dry-cleaned; that field is informative and not a search filter, so read it before you book and agree in the chat who takes it to the dry cleaner and who pays. What if it gets a stain or a tear?
Report it straight away through the platform and use your photos from pick-up and return as evidence — without photos the renter is liable for damage. The deposit is used first; where Huurmarkt protection is on for the listing, the risk pool can top up what goes beyond it. Huurmarkt assesses every report and there is no right to a payout. With clothing the difference between a conversation and a dispute is often one detail: photograph collar, cuffs, hem and fastenings before you leave, and report a stain yourself rather than letting it be discovered. Do I need identity verification to rent a costume?
That depends on the listing, not on the price. If the owner requires ID verification on the listing, that always applies — even for a cheap costume. Where Huurmarkt protection is on, you verify your identity or you book without protection, because the protection does not work without a verified renter; then only the deposit applies. If the owner does not ask for it, a verified email address and phone number are enough. The check runs through verification partner Didit: a photo of your ID and a short selfie recording, usually done within minutes.
