What does it cost to use Huurmarkt?

Accepted Answer

Creating an account, browsing and messaging are free. As a renter you pay the price the owner sets, plus a deposit where one applies and delivery costs if you choose delivery. Our service fee is not added on top: it comes off the owner's payout (usually 10%, minimum € 2). The full amount is on screen before you confirm. More about paying.

How does the deposit work?

Some listings ask for a deposit. It is not a cost but a security: the amount is held during the rental period and comes back after a clean return. It can be withheld for damage, loss or theft, a late return, or agreements that were not kept — and that always goes through a report we assess. More about the deposit.

Can I cancel, and do I get my money back?

Accepted Answer

Up to 24 hours before the start date you can cancel yourself. If the owner cancels you get everything back; if you cancel, everything except the service fee. Within that last day, and once the rental has started, you can no longer cancel yourself — our support team handles it then. The deposit is separate and comes back either way. What if something breaks?

Accepted Answer

Take photos at pick-up and at return — they are required to assess a report, and without them the renter is liable. The owner reports the damage in the chat for that booking; the renter agrees or disagrees, and we assess and decide. The deposit is used first, then the risk pool behind Huurmarkt protection. If an amount remains above that, the owner can claim it from the renter directly. That protection is not insurance, but an arrangement of ours with its own terms and limits. Some listings aren't booked on Huurmarkt. Why?

Some listings come from businesses whose booking process we cannot take over. You recognise them by the "External booking" label and by a button to that company's site. Payment, deposit, cancellation and Huurmarkt protection do not run through us there, but through that company's terms. How to spot them.

Do I have to verify my identity?

Accepted Answer

Not by default. For most items a verified email address and phone number are enough. Each owner decides per listing whether they want an identity check, and for vehicles they can also require a verified, valid driving licence — if they do, you complete that check once before you can book. What if the owner doesn't reply?

Accepted Answer

All communication runs through the chat on the listing, so there is always a record. If a request goes unanswered it simply expires and you pay nothing. If something goes wrong on a booking that is already made, contact us and we will step in. To the help centre.
