From a drill to a holiday home, from neighbours and rental companies — by day or by night, paid through Huurmarkt.
Huurmarkt is a rental marketplace in the Netherlands where you rent stuff from people and businesses near you instead of buying it for one job, party or holiday. A drill, trailer, party tent or roof box sits idle most of the year; here you rent it for a day or a week from someone who already owns it — a neighbour or a rental company nearby.
Twelve categories, from tools and vehicles to party gear, watersports and places to stay; some items are shared for free. You compare day price and deposit, agree the details by chat and pay through Huurmarkt with iDEAL or credit card — never in cash. Where the owner has switched Huurmarkt protection on, the risk pool can cover damage beyond the deposit. The site and the booking flow are available in English.
Places to stay are the exception: a stay is booked per night, and responding to a long-term rental home is free for the seeker. The platform rules — rental days, cancelling, paying, deposit, protection, verification and damage — are set out once below.
Rental days are calendar days, including the first and the last: pick up on Friday and return on Monday counts as four days, Monday through Wednesday as three. Half a day (morning or afternoon) is possible only where the owner offers it, at a price the owner sets; a day and a half is rounded up to two days. From 7 days a weekly discount may apply and from 28 days a monthly discount, if the owner has set one — the higher one counts, they do not stack. A stay is booked in nights rather than days, with a check-in and a check-out date; read more in How to book an item on Huurmarkt.
Yes: up to 24 hours before the start date you cancel yourself under My bookings and get the rental price, deposit and any delivery fee back, minus the service fee (usually 10% of the rental price, minimum €2 — the amount that otherwise comes out of the payout to the owner). Within 24 hours of the start or after it, cancelling goes through customer service; if you ask to cancel after the start, only the deposit comes back, and force majeure is assessed case by case. If the owner cancels, you always get everything back, including the service fee. Refunds go to the same payment method — see the Cancellation and refund policy.
You pay the day price × the number of days plus the deposit and any delivery fee, through Huurmarkt with iDEAL (the Dutch bank payment method), credit card or another available method — never in cash or outside the platform. You see that breakdown (rent, deposit, delivery, total) before you pay, and the deposit comes back after the rental. Items with a day price of €0 are shared for free; then you only pay a deposit if there is one. The service fee (usually 10%, minimum €2) and, where Huurmarkt protection is on, the protection contribution come out of the payout to the owner and are not added on top of the day price — more in Payments on Huurmarkt.
The owner sets the deposit; you see it up front on the listing and Huurmarkt holds it during the rental — as security, not as a cost. It is released as soon as the owner confirms the return, and otherwise automatically 72 hours after the last rental day if no damage report is open — for a stay too. After that it takes another five to ten business days before the money is back in your account. In case of damage, loss, late return or an open dispute the deposit can be withheld in full or in part, or held until the dispute is settled; if a booking is cancelled, it always comes back — read the Deposit policy.
Huurmarkt protection (HPS) is not insurance but a protection system run by Huurmarkt with two layers: first the deposit, then a risk pool that can top up damage to €2,000 per report, for items worth up to €10,000. It applies only to listings where the owner has switched protection on — not to living spaces and vehicles, and not to items shared for free. Huurmarkt assesses every report; the conditions are photos at pick-up and return, a verified renter (if you do not verify, you book without protection — then only the deposit applies) and damage within the rental period, and there is no entitlement to a payout. Misuse, negligent or illegal use and damage outside the rental period are not covered — everything is in Huurmarkt Protection System (HPS).
Not to create an account: that works with Apple, Google, an email address or a phone number, without ID, from age 18. An ID check belongs to the rental itself: you cannot book without ID verification if the owner requires it on the listing — that requirement always stands. Where Huurmarkt protection is on for the listing, you verify your identity or you book without protection: protection only works with a verified renter, and without protection only the deposit applies. On listings without that requirement a verified email address and phone number are enough; on top of that, Huurmarkt recommends verification from €250 item value and asks for it from €1,000 and for living spaces and vehicles. The check runs through our verification partner Didit (a photo of your ID plus a short selfie recording), Huurmarkt keeps no document copy or biometrics, and you never share your ID, driving licence or BSN in the chat — more in Identity verification on Huurmarkt.
Report damage right away through the platform, with your pick-up and return photos as evidence — without photos, the renter is liable. For the owner, the moment the deposit is released automatically is in practice the reporting window: 72 hours after the last rental day, for a stay too. Huurmarkt assesses the report: the deposit first, then — with Huurmarkt protection on — the risk pool up to €2,000 per report; the owner can claim any remainder directly from the renter, with Huurmarkt mediating. Misuse, negligence or use by unauthorised persons fall outside the protection and are for the renter's account — steps in Report damage on Huurmarkt.
