A roof box for the ski trip, a tent for a weekend in the Veluwe, skis for kids who will be a size bigger again next year: gear you use two weeks a year and store for fifty. Roof box or snow chains: rent or buy? Do the sums
Count the days you actually use something. For most families snow chains spend one ski week a year in the boot and only fit the tyre size of your own car; if your car changes now and then or you do not go every year, renting wins. If you do go every year with the same car, buying is cheaper — the ANWB (which also sells them) concludes that renting is really only worthwhile for a one-off trip. With a roof box, storage counts too: it is big, and you need roof bars separately.
Will the roof box or bike carrier fit your car?
Start with the mounting. A roof box needs roof bars that fit your roof; if they are not under Included accessories, arrange them yourself. A bike carrier mounts on the tow bar — usually the sturdiest choice for heavy e-bikes — or on the rear door; check the carrier's maximum load and the permitted nose weight of your tow bar. choose Rent a roof box or bike carrier above, filter by Mounting (Roof, Tow bar or Rear door) and mention your car make and year in the chat.
Tent, backpack or skis: people, season and level
For a tent, count one extra person for your luggage; a two-person tent is tight for two adults with gear. Check Season to see what weather the tent or camping gear is made for: summer, winter or year-round. For skis and snowboards the owner can state a Skill level (Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced) and the length under Size / dimensions; always have the bindings adjusted to your boot size, weight and level. For backpacks and climbing gear look at Activity type — hiking, cycling, climbing or water — and ask in the chat exactly what is included.
Frequently asked questions
Roof box or snow chains: rent or buy — when is renting the smarter choice?
Renting wins if you use them once or your car is about to change; if you go skiing every year with the same car, buying is cheaper in the long run — that is also the conclusion of the ANWB, the Dutch motoring association (which also sells them), on snow chains. For comparison: specialist roof-box rental companies in the Netherlands advertise day prices from around €4 to €7.50, and at commercial rental companies snow chains often rent from around €40 per ten days. On Huurmarkt the owner sets the day price and the deposit, and you see both before you book; you can book up to 2 hours before pick-up, though you will notice when booking whether the owner still has to confirm your booking first.
Will the roof box or bike carrier fit my car?
Only if the mounting matches: a roof box needs roof bars that fit your roof (not always included — check Included accessories) and a bike carrier mounts on the tow bar or on the rear door. choose Rent a roof box or bike carrier above and filter by Mounting (Roof, Tow bar or Rear door); before you book, send the owner your car make and year, whether you have roof bars or a tow bar, and for e-bikes the weight of the bikes. Are roof bars, tent pegs or ski poles included?
It varies per listing: under Included accessories you see what the owner provides, for example roof bars with a roof box, pegs and a groundsheet with a tent, or poles and a helmet with skis. If it is not listed, assume it is not included and ask in the chat; under Size / dimensions you find the length of the skis or the volume of the roof box in litres. Check together at pick-up that everything is complete — that is also the moment for the photos. Read more about item pick-up.
What if the tent or skis come back damaged?
Then the pick-up and return photos count: agree in advance what is normal use (light scratches on the base of the skis, a stain on the tent fabric) and what is not (a torn zip, a broken tent pole, a crack in the roof box). Report damage straight away at return, with photos of the spot. How the deposit and Huurmarkt protection work from there is explained on the Rent page; you report it via report damage.
Can I also rent a camper van or caravan on Huurmarkt?
