Identity verification on Huurmarkt
In short
Some bookings require identity verification. The owner decides that per listing.
- No ID required to create an account.
- The owner switches on per listing whether they require a verified renter, and whether they also require a verified driving licence.
- If Huurmarkt protection is enabled on a listing, only a verified renter can book that listing.
- If none of the three is on, you book with a verified email address and phone number.
- Huurmarkt advises owners to ask for verification from €250 item value, and to always ask for it from €1,000 and for homes and vehicles. That is advice; the platform does not enforce it by value or category.
- Verification is performed by our verification partner Didit and runs automatically, with human review available if you get stuck.
- Never share your ID or driving licence via chat.
Why do I need to verify?
Identity verification improves:
- Safety for owners
- Trust between users
- Fraud protection
- Responsible use of valuable items
Huurmarkt is a marketplace facilitator. For certain transactions, extra assurance is needed.
When is verification required?
1. The owner switches it on per listing
There is no automatic item-value threshold and no category that makes verification mandatory by itself. What does exist are three switches on the listing:
| Enabled on the listing | What it means for the renter |
|---|---|
| "Require a verified identity" | You can only book once your identity is verified |
| "Require a verified driving licence" | You can only book with a verified, unexpired driving licence |
| Huurmarkt protection | You can only book once your identity is verified — the protection terms require a verified renter |
If none of the three is on, you book with a verified email address and phone number. What applies to a listing is shown on that listing, before you book.
Huurmarkt advises owners when to switch those on:
- From €250 item value: ask for identity verification
- From €1,000, and for homes and vehicles: always ask for it
- For items with emotional or unique value: below those amounts too
That is advice to the owner, not a platform rule — they decide it themselves, per listing.
If you try to book without the required verification, you'll see a message:
"This owner only accepts renters with a verified identity. Verify your identity to place this booking."
2. The driving-licence requirement
If driving is involved, the owner can also switch on the driving-licence requirement. When it is on:
- Your identity must be verified
- The document you had verified must be a driving licence — so use your driving licence as the document and one check counts for both
- That driving licence must not be expired at the time of booking
You never have to upload anything in chat: you prove it once through your identity check. Without that verification, the booking cannot proceed.
Whether your licence covers the right vehicle category is not checked by Huurmarkt. That stays between you and the owner.
How does ID verification work?
- You start a rental that requires verification.
- You receive a prompt to verify your identity.
- You're redirected to the secure verification environment of our verification partner Didit.
- There you take:
- A photo of a valid ID document
- A short selfie capture
- Does the listing ask for a verified driving licence? Then use your driving licence as the document
- The check runs automatically. It verifies:
- Document authenticity and validity (the document details are read automatically)
- That the selfie comes from a real, present person (liveness check)
- That the face in the selfie matches the photo on the document (1:1 face comparison)
- You receive a confirmation as soon as verification is approved.
Upon approval, Huurmarkt stores the following details from your document: first name, last name, date of birth, nationality and document type.
Huurmarkt itself does not store copies of your identity document or any biometric data (such as your selfie or facial features); that processing takes place at the verification partner.
How long does verification take?
In most cases:
- A few minutes
- Sometimes a few hours
- In exceptional cases up to 24 hours
If manual review is required, it may take longer.
What if verification is rejected?
Verification can be rejected if:
- The document has expired
- The document is unreadable
- The information doesn't match
- You used a different document than the driving licence the listing asks for
- Suspected fraud is detected
In that case:
- You can try again
- Your booking may be temporarily paused
- In serious cases, your account may be restricted
The automated outcome is not the end of the road. Stuck, or disagree with a rejection? Contact Support — a staff member will then review your situation manually.
What must NOT be shared via chat?
For your own safety:
- Never send a photo of your ID via chat
- Never send a photo of your driving licence via chat
- Never share your BSN (Dutch citizen number)
- Never share your verification code
- Never share full document numbers
Huurmarkt and owners will never request these via chat.
If someone asks for them: → End the conversation → Report it via Support
Privacy & data protection
Identity verification is performed by our external verification partner Didit, in a secure environment.
Important:
- Huurmarkt does not store copies of identity documents
- Huurmarkt does not store biometric data (selfie, facial features)
- Upon approval, Huurmarkt only stores: first name, last name, date of birth, nationality and document type
- Data is processed under GDPR
- Verification details are not made public
- Documents are not shared with other users
- If verification is rejected or unclear, you can always get a human review via Support
More information is available in the Privacy Policy.
What if my driving licence expires during the rental?
If a listing requires a verified driving licence, Huurmarkt checks at booking time that the licence is not expired at that moment. Whether it stays valid until the end of the rental is not something we check — that remains your responsibility. Your driving licence must:
- Be valid at the start of the rental
- Remain valid throughout the entire rental period
If your driving licence expires during the rental, this can lead to:
- Cancellation
- The owner's own insurance lapsing
- Liability for damage
Always check validity in advance.
Can an owner require additional verification?
Yes — in fact, that is how it works. The owner switches on per listing whether they want a verified identity and/or a verified driving licence. That happens for example with:
- Very high-value vehicles
- Commercial use
- International renters
What applies to a listing is stated on that listing, before you book.
Summary

- Huurmarkt advises owners to ask for verification from €250 item value and to always ask for it from €1,000 and for homes and vehicles. Advice, not an automatic rule.
- Verification runs automatically through our verification partner Didit; after a rejection, human review is available via Support.
- Huurmarkt only stores first name, last name, date of birth, nationality and document type — no document copies or biometric data.
- Never share documents via chat.
