Setting price & deposit on Huurmarkt

OwnerLast updated: Apr 30, 2026

In short

As an owner you set:

  • The day rate
  • The half-day rate (if allowed)
  • Optional delivery fees
  • The deposit

Aim for a realistic price and a fitting deposit. The deposit is a security, not an extra revenue source.

How do I set my rental price?

When creating a listing you can configure:

  • Price per full day
  • Price per half day (optional)
  • Optional delivery fees

The total is calculated automatically based on the chosen rental period.

Day rate

The day rate is the standard rate for one full rental day.

Important:

  • Multiple days = day rate × number of days
  • A rental of e.g. 1.5 days is rounded up to 2 full days
  • There is no automatic volume discount unless configured

Pick a price that:

  • Matches market value
  • Is realistic compared with similar items
  • Accounts for maintenance and risk

Half day (morning / afternoon)

If allowed in your category you can set a separate half-day price.

Default half-day windows:

  • Morning: 08:00 – 13:00
  • Afternoon: 13:00 – 18:00

The half-day rate:

  • Is not automatically 50% of the day rate
  • Is set manually
  • Applies to both morning and afternoon

You can also choose not to allow half days.

Setting delivery fees

If you offer delivery, you can configure:

  • A base delivery fee
  • A per-kilometre rate (as the crow flies)

Delivery fees:

  • Are shown clearly to the renter up front
  • Are calculated automatically during booking
  • Must be realistic and transparent

Delivery is optional and can be enabled or disabled per listing.

Setting the deposit

The deposit is a refundable amount that acts as security.

You set the deposit amount yourself.

The deposit:

  • Is shown to the renter up front
  • Is processed according to the deposit policy
  • Is not paid out to you automatically
  • May be (partially) retained for damage or breach

See the deposit policy for full details.

How do I choose an appropriate deposit?

When deciding on the deposit, consider:

  • The value of the item
  • Risk of damage or loss
  • The category (e.g. vehicles, electronics, tools)
  • Replacement costs

General guidelines:

  • Higher value → typically higher deposit
  • Higher risk → typically higher deposit
  • Low-value items → lower deposit

Note:

  • A deposit that's too high discourages bookings.
  • A deposit that's too low offers insufficient protection.

Pick an amount proportional to the risk.

What happens with the deposit?

The deposit:

  • Is held during the rental period
  • Is released after correct completion
  • May be temporarily held in case of damage or dispute

The deposit does not replace insurance and does not guarantee full compensation. Huurmarkt Protection is not insurance either: there is a maximum per report and no entitlement to payment.

Car rentals: extra attention

For vehicles:

  • A higher deposit is often required
  • Additional verification may be needed
  • Possible fines or damage should be factored in

Make sure the deposit matches the risk profile of the vehicle.

Owner responsibility

As an owner you are responsible for:

  • Fair pricing
  • Transparency about costs
  • A realistic deposit
  • Clear communication

Unreasonable or misleading pricing can lead to complaints or listing moderation.

What is not allowed?

  • Settling deposit or payment outside the platform
  • Charging extra costs not disclosed up front
  • Changing prices after a booking is confirmed
  • Hidden fees

All costs must be shown transparently up front.

Summary

When setting price and deposit:

  • Set a day rate and optional half-day rate.
  • Multi-day rentals are multiplied automatically.
  • Delivery fees are optional and transparent.
  • Pick a deposit that matches value and risk.
  • The deposit is processed under the deposit policy.

A clear, fair pricing structure increases trust and bookings.
