RenterOwnerLast updated: Sep 1, 2026

In short

A no-show means one of the parties doesn't appear at the agreed moment without a valid cancellation.

  • No-show by renter → rental price may be retained.
  • No-show by owner → renter receives a refund.
  • Always report a no-show through the platform immediately.

What is a no-show?

It's a no-show when:

  • The renter doesn't appear at pickup
  • The owner doesn't appear at handover
  • No prior cancellation has been made through the platform

Chat-only communication without an official cancellation does not count as a valid cancellation.

No-show by renter

If the renter doesn't appear at the agreed time:

Possible consequences:

  • The rental price may be fully or partially retained
  • The deposit is processed according to the deposit policy
  • The owner can make the item available again
  • It can affect the renter's reliability score

The exact consequences may depend on:

  • The cancellation terms
  • Any communication
  • The situation on the ground

No-show by owner

If the owner doesn't appear at the agreed time:

  • The renter receives a refund of the rental price
  • The deposit is fully released
  • It can affect the owner's visibility and reliability

Repeated no-shows by owners can lead to:

  • Loss of Instant Book
  • Temporary or permanent account restrictions

What should I do at a no-show?

If the other party doesn't appear:

  1. Wait a reasonable period (e.g. 15–30 minutes)
  2. Reach out via the chat
  3. Try phone contact if available
  4. Report the no-show through the platform

Make sure you have evidence of your presence, e.g.:

  • Location timestamp
  • A photo
  • Chat history

What if both parties miss each other?

If both parties:

  • Are not present at exactly the same time
  • Or miss each other due to miscommunication

The situation is assessed based on:

  • Chat history
  • Timestamps
  • Reasonableness

Huurmarkt may mediate if needed.

No-show in vehicle rentals

For car rentals, extra care applies.

If the renter:

  • Doesn't appear with valid ID or driving licence
  • Doesn't meet verification requirements

The owner can refuse the handover.

This can be treated as a renter no-show.

Always check in advance:

  • Validity of your driving licence
  • Completed verification
  • Time and location

What happens with the payment?

For renter no-show:

  • The rental price may be retained per the terms
  • The deposit is processed according to the deposit policy

For owner no-show:

  • The rental price is refunded to the renter
  • The deposit is released

Once the refund has been initiated, it takes another five to ten business days before the amount is in the account.

What does NOT count as a no-show?

Not a no-show when:

  • A cancellation was made on time through the platform
  • Force majeure applies
  • Both parties agreed to a new appointment

Force majeure is assessed case by case.

Misuse of no-show reports

Falsely reporting a no-show can lead to:

  • Investigation by Huurmarkt
  • Account restriction
  • Temporary suspension

Transparency and honesty are essential for the platform.

Important

  • Always cancel through the platform if you can't make it.
  • Don't rely on chat-only agreements.
  • Don't arrange payments outside Huurmarkt.
